A temporary situation came up which requires me to transfer from the NYARNG to the AR for a few years before returning to my unit in the NYARNG. Does anyone have information on how the temporary release will affect my bonus/GI Bill/GI Bill (Kicker)? I don't plan on changing my enlistment contract and will still serve the full 8 years, but I'm not really sure how the whole process works in the first place. If someone can elaborate that would be great.

You will forfeit the kicker if you do not fulfill the terms of that amendment to your contract.
In every case I have ever seen, it is a provision that you remain in the kicker MOS and often unit of assignment. Since this is a state benefit (probably), leaving the Guard means not fulfilling those terms.

Read the amendment to be sure.

Thank you 1SG, does the guard offer consolidated drilling like the reserves? If you happen to know.

PFC (Join to see) - Depends ion the unit. Most don't offer it directly, but if your situation s unique, an individual commander may grant it.
I have a Soldier who works as an FSO in a US Consulate in Mexico. He travels to MN to drill for a few mandatory drills (WQ, SRP, etc) and works a consolidated schedule the rest of the time. It works for him, and we got to retain an exceptional Soldier.

I see in your response below that you are going to be in Italy. There are a handful of Reserve units in Viscenza; more in Germany. If you can work out travel, that might be an option.

Yeah, my wife's stationed there (active) and I don't mind coming back to the states to drill, but every month is a bit much. What about the MOS bonus and the GI bill? Would you know if they are normally affected?

PFC (Join to see) - GI Bill should not be, a bonus MOS may well be. It'll be in the bonus amendment. Depends on if it is tied to assignment in a specific unit or component. I have seen it both ways.

I'm not entirely sure how it works going from guard to army reserves. But I recently got released from the national guard to go on active duty and any kicker/bonus of mine had to be recouped before releasing me because the national guard is what pays for that. The army reserve having separate funding from the national guard probably means you will have to do the same before getting released. Why do you need to be released from the guard to go to the reserves? It's very rare that the guard releases their soldiers and it's usually due to very specific situations and is almost always for active enlistment, not reserves. Why are you requesting a release?

I have to live in Italy for a few years, It's because of the relocation. That's why it would be a temp. assignment.
