So the 48th Infantry Brigade of Georgia will be affiliated with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division. Back in 1990 when the 24th Infantry Division at Fort Stewart deployed for Desert Shield/Storm the 48th Brigade did not deploy with them even though they were in actuality the 24th Divisions 3rd Brigade. The reason was they were not combat ready. Same thing with the 1st Cavalry Division's National Guard "Round Out" Brigade during Desert Storm. These 2 Division's were eventually given active duty brigade to fill them out for combat, but what I am saying is this has been tried before, and it failed miserably. During the Cold War many CONUS based Army Divisions had only 2 ground brigades, with a Guard Brigade assigned in case of war.

That's a fair point, MSG. I gather the intent is to keep the Guard force more properly trained and equipped, but that is undeniably a task easier said then done. Hell, I haven't been issued a pair of gas mask inserts since I graduated BCT, even though I report the deficiency twice a year.

My unit had AD and AGR's as Unit Advisors .It appeared for the most part that the AD personnel were ROD's for the most part. The AGR folks tried to make believe they were real AD soldiers and many did not know their MOS's.

LTC James McElreath - In the Global War on Terror, Guard, and Reserve units have a mobilization period that can be up to 6 months. A war like Desert Storm meant the phone rang, we were alerted, shipped our Bradleys, and got on an aircraft all within 3 weeks.

It depends entirely on the units involved. I had the absolute pleasure to work with a National Guard Infantry battalion from Georgia that was disciplined and performed brilliantly. At the same time we had a USAR unit that made F-Troop look like Delta Force.

It requires standardized training. The AD is working with the NG/RC units now.
