The C rats were pretty grim. And greasy. But they had cigarettes.

My only good memories of C rats was the little cans of short bread and peanut butter and jelly. We'd slice the bread and toast it over a can of Sterno and put peanut butter and jelly on it and then wash it down with warm Ballentine beer. Life didn't get any better then that!

Having eaten five types of field rations, I'd rate them from best to worst as follows:
1. PIRs (Viet indigenous rations -- yummy and so versatile)
2. MREs (too heavy for me).
3. C-Rations (too much fat, but I joined the Army right out of poverty, so they seemed good to me).
4. LRP-Rations (PIRs with no class).
5. K-Rations (which must have been 25 years old when I tried them, but none of us got sick).

I learned to make "Ranger Pudding" when I earned my 2nd DD-214 in the 90's. Crumble your MRE crackers in the bag (different from the John Wayne crackers I had in the 60's and 70's), then open the bag, put your chocolate cocoa powder, sugar and creamer packets in and add water from your canteen. Stir with plastic spoon, stick or whatever's available. It ain't too bad when that's the best you can do.
