Silent Service S01 E01: USS The Jack at Tokyo
The USS Jack springs a leak while well into Japanese waters. An engineer takes on the dangerous mission of repairing it.
Considering the technology of the time, they were very effective. There was a TV show about WWII subs. Here is the first episode:

The crew of the Tang were absolute beasts of men! The Japanese navy rightly feared this boat.
Humorously, my first visit to Pearl Harbor included the following.
A LCpl, from Texas (think Teeter off of Yellowstone), was telling us about a 60 foot red and white tower on Ford Island. We said, a tire? He said yep.
When we manned the rails and sailed into Pearl, he pointed to the Momsen lung training tower. We were like, what the hell!

My late uncle, a VADM, wanted me to join the Navy. I admire the sailors of the submarine service, but I cannot serve underwater for months at a time in such a confined space. I wish them well, but that was not the service for me. Don't know how they manage that, to be honest.

When I was at Schofield Barracks from '73-'76 we had a ballistic missile sub XO who attended my church. His story of his selection by Adm. Rickover was priceless . . .

My uncle had to go through that same process. ADM Rickover challenged him, "Do something to make me mad." My uncle responded by sweeping off the top of his desk onto the floor of his office. Rickover immediately threw him out, but later called him back.
