Not many people are aware that after the Civil War Longstreet became a hated man in the defeated south. One reason was that he wrote a book in which he criticized Gen Lee for the decisions Lee made at Gettysburg, allegely (according to Longstreet) against Longstreet's advice. The second reason was that Longstreet became a Republican and bought into the Reconstruction of the South. Thereafter, Longstreet was ostracized from veteran's reunions and reportedly had a hard time finding work. Another Confederate officer who found himself in the same pickle was Col John S. Mosby (the "Grey Ghost"), who after the war was a lawyer. He became a Republican and a friend of President Grant. His Virginia neighbors did not like him for that and he had to leave. He was the U.S. Consul in Hong Kong and spent a lot of time (as a lawyer) representing railroads in California. He only appeared at a reunion of his old Confederate unit, the 43rd Virginia Battalion, once much later.
