There’s little consolation for the Motelet family these days, but knowing that the tragedy that took their son wasn’t a complete loss is bringing them a little bit of comfort.
Brian, who was just 15 years old, died from choking. According to his father, “We tried to do CPR on him. The ambulance did resuscitate him, but he didn’t make it. He was on life support and they pronounced him brain dead.”
For a teenager to be taken so suddenly by an accident is unimaginably painful, but Brian’s parents made sure that their son’s story wouldn’t end there.
Belle Kelm, a 9-year-old with an enlarged heart, was in desperate need of a transplant. Brian’s organs were harvested once he was pronounced dead, and Belle got his heart soon after.
“It’s part of the only things that are keeping me going,” says Brian’s mother Eula. “I think organ donation is really important not only for people that need them. It has been important for us as well. It helps with the grieving process.”
In addition to his heart, Brian’s pancreas went to a 26-year-old, and his liver and a kidney were transplanted into a 62-year-old woman.
The Motelets have been emailing back and forth with Belle’s family, and they are planning to meet them for the one-year anniversary of Brian’s death — something they hope will become a tradition.
