The U.S. 23rd Division (Americal) ceases combat operations and begins its withdrawal from South Vietnam. The division had been activated in Vietnam on September 25, 1967, after which it assumed control of the 11th, 198th, and 199th Infantry Brigades (and associated support troops). Its headquarters was at Chu Lai in I Corps Tactical Zone and division troops conducted operations in Quang Nam, Quang Tri, and Quang Ngai Provinces.
In 1970, the division continued to fight in the Duc Pho, Chu Lai, and Tam Ky areas along the coast. When the division headquarters departed South Vietnam, the division colors were returned to Fort Lewis, Washington, where the Americal Division was officially inactivated. The only unit that remained in South Vietnam was the 199th Infantry Brigade, which continued to conduct operations as a separate brigade.

SP5 Mark Kuzinski I was on the airfield in Chu Lai watching the flyover when we stood down Mark. The jeep in the background is my jeep, I was off taking the pics. After standing down with the 16th Combat Aviation Group, I was transferred to the 101st Aviation Battalion in Phu Bai and three months later they stood down. I was proud to serve with both units. The redhead guy with the ball cap was my friend Dennis leaving Chu Lai after we stood down. He is the only one I have stayed in touch with all these years. On another note, I just found out the Americal Division is holding their 2019 reunion in Rhode Island. That will be the first reunion I will have ever attended. Was going to go to the 101st a couple years ago but we had last a last minute change in plans. Prior to standing down we took a boat up to DaNang with our vehicles. I had to drive a 5/4 Ton backwards for about ten miles as that was the only gear that worked!

MSgt Robert "Rock" Aldi - A long time ago for me Rock, 1971. I was 18 then and loved flying. Wish I had done it full time. The Shithooks were from our unit, flew gunner on them a couple times. I took the pic but never noticed the bus! LOL
