Students from colleges all over the U.S. launch antiwar protest

Hundreds of colleges and universities across the nation shut down as thousands of students join a nationwide campus protest. Governor Ronald Reagan closed down the entire California university and college system until May 11, which affected more than 280,000 students on 28 campuses. Elsewhere, faculty and administrators joined students in active dissent and 536 campuses were shut down completely, 51 for the rest of the academic year. A National Student Association spokesman reported students from more than 300 campuses were boycotting classes. The protests were a reaction to the shooting of four students at Kent State University by National Guardsmen during a campus demonstration about President Nixon’s decision to send U.S. and South Vietnamese troops into Cambodia. Four days later, a student rally at Jackson State College in Mississippi resulted in the death of two students and 12 wounded when police opened fire on a women’s dormitory.

Good afternoon, my friend SP5 Mark Kuzinski and thank you for reminding us about the May 1970 protests which were focused on boycotting classes in memory of the four students who were shot at Kent State.
In those days., many students believed that by boycotting their own classes they would be helping to bring about change at a national level. I expect some paid their own way while most benefited from parents paying the tuition else student loans.
Ironically now radical progressive POTUS wannabee Elizabeth Warren wants to forgive all student debt :-)
Violence on college campuses tended to dominate news cycles. Thankfully most colleges and universities functioned through those days with generally peaceful protests or none at all.

Video of music and images from a student at the time who was unable to find a job after he graduated. He ends with it is nice to know the Army would have taken him :-)

We had a sitrep at the Comm college I went to and some students did a boycott. The school put a note out those on grants and scholarships were prohibited from boycotting. There was a condition in their grants and scholarships and was approved by the courts. Another agreement was they could not challenge the court’s decision..
it had to be done on summer break.. or semester break..
