Made my own GAU-5 clone last year from a AR-15 Pistol and it didn't cost me $2600.
Is it perfect? No, but it is close enough. I carried a GAU-5 frequently as a duty weapon while I was stationed in Turkey so there is a connection to it for me. It will never have an optic on it unless i can secure an AN/PVS-4 (also used in Turkey), and will only ever use STANAG magazines. Still need to swap the A2 pistol grip for an A1.
