COL Mikel J. Burroughs here is an additional read/share to go along with the read:

There is another “I am what I am” that I came across last week. 1 Corinthians 15:9-10 says: “For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”

I Am What I Am

PHIL TRAVIS, YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTER

A good cartoon character is well-defined. Their character should be clear in their actions, the way they look and how they sound. A good cartoon character is timeless, the same (or virtually the same) through various mediums, and throughout the years. They don’t need to change because their role is to be a characterization, to be static. The situation around them changes and the joy is seeing how the character you know reacts in a new situation. Spongebob is always going to be loud and obnoxious. Mickey Mouse will always be mostly straight-laced but a little mischievous. Goofy will always be… goofy.

I don’t think any cartoon character makes this clearer than Popeye the Sailor Man and one of his catchphrases, “I am what I am.” This phrase has a two-fold purpose. First, it declares a pride in who he is, and second, it is a refusal to change. This is all well and good for a cartoon character, but when it comes to people this phrase can be problematic.

Popeye The Sailor ManCertainly we should have the type of self-worth this phrase communicates. We shouldn’t change who we are in order to make others like us, for example. In this way, the “I am what I am” phrase can be helpful. However, sometimes “I am what I am” can become an excuse for acting any way I want, and woe betide anyone who complains about my poor behavior! This is an unhealthy aspect of the phrase. When “whatever I am” becomes “what is right,” we’ve made a wrong turn on the self-worth highway.

God’s perspective is different. He accepts and loves us as we are, but calls us to greater things. A cartoon character that doesn’t change for years and years is a good character. A person who refuses to change for years and years has stopped growing. No one is perfect, but to plant your feet and refuse to grow to say, “I am what I am,” is to declare perfection wrongly. It’s saying “I don’t need to change because what I am is already perfect.”

Here we have a picture of a man who thought he was right (and righteous) but when he had a face to face encounter with God, he had to change. It wasn’t enough for him to say “this is what I have always been.” That wasn’t what God called him to. But by God’s grace he became a new man. And he has God to thank for who he “am.”

You and I are not cartoon characters. We are called to perfection and it is a long road that will take our whole lives. Let us not rest in “I am what I am” but, like Paul, allow the grace of God to have an effect on us so that, by the grace of God, “What I am” becomes “what I was.”

Good morning Col Burroughs and Happy Monday. I have a workshop this morning so I will try to check back in later on.
We are all unique and should not try to be someone else. The world is made like a puzzle with each piece different and fitting in with its own special design. When we change to make ourselves less who we are, something special is lost and the picture is no longer what it was supposed to be. Value your uniqueness and what you bring to an organization. None of us has exactly the same outlook, experience, point of view, etc and we are all needed to make a successful world.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - Awesome message this morning Charlie and thanks for all the great quotes you shared. Very unique!!

“There is no comparison you are unique in your own special way and you should respect that. May your uniqueness be your strength, and may you always be a leader with high energy and the attributes you bring to this world that are yours and no one else’s; may you always have a that positive outlook on life that makes you even more unique; may your mind, body, and soul be opened to grace, goodness, peace, forgiveness, and a bountiful life of purpose; and keep your family safe, secure, happy, and healthy during these uncertain times. Don’t ever forget there is nobody like you.” — COL (Ret) Mikel Burroughs

I hope you appreciate most of your unique characteristics since you have matured well beyond adolescence. I expect you are aware that your hopes, dreams, fears, plans, loves and likes are unique to you. Hopefully you are mature enough to appreciate that others have different preferences in terms of food, music, humor and opinion. ‘Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. [2 Peter 2:16-17 ESV] my sister-in-Christ Lt Col Charlie Brown.

I pray that each parent, grandparent and teacher who is YOUR adopted son and daughter has wisdom enough to seek YOUR guidance on how best to educate the children, grandchildren. Students respectfully. Those who are wise understand that each child is unique in many ways and they tend to learn best through different methods. ‘Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it. ‘Proverbs 22:6 ESV]
Brothers and sisters in Christ, we know there is only one unique door that leads to salvation. By God’s grace that door has been opened for time and eternity by the Atonement of Jesus the Christ. We know that no work is required for salvation since God has completed all that is necessary. ‘Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. [1 Peter 1:10-12 ESV]
The Word of God is the only truly living book. God’s Word in unique in every sense. No other collection of writings has been completely written under the inspiration of God. ‘For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts.’ [Hebrews 4:12 ESV]
I pray that you and your family members sleep well Monday night and will awake refreshed and healthy on Tuesday morning.
By the power and authority of the Name above all names, Jesus the Christ.

COL Mikel Burroughs good read/share: for the Colonel's Motivational Quotes of the Day. Where the mighty American Bald Eagles roam in the mighty ROCKY MOUNTAINS OF CASTLE ROCK, COLORADO AMONG THIER EAGLES-NEST. I know the view must be MAGNIFICIENT on this day December 14, 2020 as you might glance upon the mighty snowcapped mountains headed into the New Year 2020. As you know I would respond a lot throughout the week, but I am full-time DOD employee doing contracts for the Defense Contracting Management Agency. It is good to have some time on my break to respond my friend.

Today's theme is “Unique Day!” “You’re unique don’t be a follower be a leader.” — Unknown Author

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL - When I was in high school, I was an assistant manager to the swim team; I was also a relief swimmer. When I did the front crawl, I looked just like Popeye when catching a breath and was so skinny that I got the nickname of Olive Oil.
