Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Flashes of the Crab Pulsar." A pulsar is a rapidly-spinning neutron star that emits radio waves. Pulsars are one of the possible remnants from a supernova explosion. The Crab Nebula (located in the constellation Taurus) contains an embedded pulsar, and that is what you see in this short video clip. Look just left and above center to see it. The supernova that formed the Crab Nebula was seen on Earth in the year 1054. Given that the Crab Nebula is ~6,500 light years away, that means the explosion occurred 7,500 or so years ago.
Also known as NGC 1952 and Taurus A, The Crab Nebula was first identified in 1731 by English doctor John Bevis. The nebula was independently rediscovered in 1758 by Charles Messier as he was observing a bright comet, and catalogued it as the first entry in his catalogue of comet-like objects (now known as M1). You've probably seen pictures of the Crab Nebula before. It's worth an extra search to take a peek if you don't remember it.

It is nice to see images from almost 1,000 years ago [predicted on the basis of calculated speed of light]. The heavens declare the glory of God to those with eyes to see.

It is the Crab Pulsar, the rotating neutron star remnant of the supernova that created the Crab Nebula. A careful eye can spot the pulsar flashes in the featured time-lapse video, just above the image center. The video was created by adding together images taken only when the pulsar was flashing, as well as co-added images from other relative times. The Crab Pulsar flashes may have been first noted by an unknown woman attending a public observing night at the University of Chicago in 1957 -- but who was not believed. The progenitor supernova explosion was seen by many in the year 1054 AD. The expanding Crab Nebula remains a picturesque expanding gas cloud that glows across the electromagnetic spectrum. The pulsar is now thought to have survived the supernova explosion because it is composed of extremely-dense quantum-degenerate matter."
