Thank you, my friend CW5 Jack Cardwell for sharing the memoirs of U.S. Army WWII veteran Harry "Pete" Shaw Jr.'s journey from D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge, to the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp.
He enlisted at age 17. He was colorblind. Attempted to join the Navy but his colorblindness stopped that plan. His childhood friend Carlos tried to help him. Training at Dothan, Alabama and then on to England in May 1944 and took part in Operation Overlord landing on Utah Beach after the infantry.
The Battle for St Lo lasted 22 days, Colmar, Cologne, Nuremburg,
The Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 - last major offensive of the German armor formations. That was the toughest fighting he experienced.
