Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "NGC 6814: Grand Design Spiral Galaxy from Hubble." NGC 6814 is a spiral galaxy found some 75 million light years from Earth in constellation Aquila (The Eagle). Given its apparent dimensions, the galaxy is about 85,000 light years across. A grand design spiral galaxy has prominent and well-defined spiral arms thatextend clearly around the galaxy through many radians and can be observed over a large fraction of the galaxy's radius. NGC-6814 is also classified as a Seyfert galaxy, for it also has a quasar-like nucleus (very luminous, distant and bright sources of electromagnetic radiation) with very high surface brightness. A gorgeous image in my humble opinion.

Thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for Sunday August, 16 entitled "NGC 6814: Grand Design Spiral Galaxy from Hubble."
I posted three more spiral galaxy images taken by the Hubble. It noteworthy that some spirals are clockwise and others counter-clockwise. From the Hubble perspective, NGC 6814 is a clockwise spiral galaxy.

"Explanation: In the center of this serene stellar swirl is likely a harrowing black-hole beast. The surrounding swirl sweeps around billions of stars which are highlighted by the brightest and bluest. The breadth and beauty of the display give the swirl the designation of a grand design spiral galaxy. The central beast shows evidence that it is a supermassive black hole about 10 million times the mass of our Sun. This ferocious creature devours stars and gas and is surrounded by a spinning moat of hot plasma that emits blasts of X-rays. The central violent activity gives it the designation of a Seyfert galaxy. Together, this beauty and beast are cataloged as NGC 6814 and have been appearing together toward the constellation of the Eagle (Aquila) for roughly the past billion years.'

Our universe is both massive and fascinating. While we have a pretty elevated view of ourselves as humans, whenever we peer into the cosmos we really see how small we are in compared to the rest of whats out there. The lowest astronomical figures say there are 100 billion galaxies (that's 100,000,000,000) in the universe, and our Milky Way is only one. Take the Earth - and multiply it times 17 billion. That's how many Earth-sized worlds exist only in the Milky Way Galaxy. Multiply that times 100 billion galaxies and you have a massive universe, not even counting the stars and non-Earth-sized planets. Here, we focus on some of the most amazing aspects of our universe: galaxies. The masses of stars, planets, debris, dark matter, and more follow some general patterns but sometimes even they break tradition and amaze us, earning them a spot on this list of the strangest and most bizarre galaxies in the universe.
