Spent most of my career with the heavies. God made rucksacks to keep your stuff from bouncing loose in the back of the APC, not for carrying. Coolest feeling in the world was convoying on the autobahn as a squad leader, standing in the hatch of the M113, leaning on your Ma Deuce.

Staring down into the Beemers with all the pretty German ladies in their short skirts, what was not to like? (Probably shouldn't admit that, but there you are.)

1SG Steven Imerman “Standing in the hatch of the M113”.

That is a whole lot better than sitting in the hatch cover!

I was never comfortable in the hatch cover. Any quick maneuver and lots of bad things could happen in a hurry.

1SG Steven Imerman No sxxt!

I recall: OH-58 flies over, drops down and lands. BDE CDR exits the bird screaming, one of our LTs had been riding in his hatch cover. The LT ejected? and somehow landed on his feet at Attention as the COL arrived to eat him up!
