Im not exactly buying the official story here. My guess is that the drone is an intel gathering device with sophisticated capabilities. As SMSgt Minister Gerald A. "Doc" Thomas said, why dont these things have a remote detonate or self destruct feature? and how on earth did a life boat capture it, who was controlling the drone and didn't that person have the skills to evade a life boat?

Other people higher up are probably asking such questions to themselves.

First anybody who seriously believes that the US Navy sea-drone operated from a US Navy ship was "being operated by civilian contractors to conduct oceanic research" is naïve SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. We don't know what specific oceanic research it was conducting but it was not as innocuous as has been made out.
For a long time we have been surveilling the South China sea re of the Spratly island and the man-made island that China has been building up.
Yes China agreed to return the drone after President-elect Donald Trump sent a tweet. I not indicating that a cause and effect relationship exists here.
However, over the decades China has seized our assets and may well have USA POWs from the Korean War as well.
I hope we will be tougher on China and recognize Taiwan as an independent state after January 20, 2017.
Hopefully our sensing devices and drones will have ramped up capabilities along the lines of the Stuxnet malicious computer worm to wipe out as many systems and people operating them as possible.

Like the US drone was "being operated by civilian contractors to conduct oceanic research" so much BS, so was the Chinese explanation they did not know what it was and picked it up as an 'underwater shipping hazard'. Just part of the ongoing tit for tat between the two nations for influence in that region.
