As I was preparing to retire from the military I closely examined the survivor benefits my husband would receive should I precede him. I was astonished how little it would be, and then the widow tax would have been added, and any estate taxes and I thought how could I protect his ability to continue financially. I calculated my life expectancy, my monthly military retirement and purchased that amount of life insurance. He will be ok. Life insurance is a must. I think the military SGLI should be calculated on marital status, family members, rank and age of the service member.
