Editorial: Our children are dying at the border. Bishops, where are you?

The arresting image of the bodies of Salvadoran migrant Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his nearly 2-year-old daughter Valeria, face down in the shallow waters of the Rio Grande River, was finally enough to elicit an impassioned plea from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: "This image cries to heaven for justice. This image silences politics. Who can look on this picture and not see the results of the failures of all of us to find a humane and just solution for the immigration crisis?"
It took that photo and a statement of lament by Pope Francis about the image to move the bishops to the kind of language that begins to gather in the horror of this national moment along our southern border. It took this moment, a mere dot on a tragedy-riddled timeline, to move the bishops beyond the anodyne and saccharine pronouncements previously pushed out of their headquarters following the evidence of caged children, separated families and manipulations of law by the Trump administration and its operatives, all clearly designed to punish, rather than relieve, desperation.

1. Thankfully Mexico is ramping up its roll in curbing the flow and interdicting coyotes.
2. On July 1, 2019 President Trump signed into law the $4.59 billion border aid package hammered out in conference between the House and Senate.
"The package includes $2.88 billion for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement, which takes custody of migrant children from CBP or ICE before releasing them to the care of family members or other sponsors.
Another $1.34 billion is provided for DHS, including $905 million for CBP to set up temporary facilities for migrants at border stations and ports of entry and provide basic necessities like food, clothing and medical treatment.
Another $209 million is for ICE accounts, including $70 million for staffing costs such as overtime pay; $93 million for detainee transportation and medical care; $21 million for counter-human trafficking operations; and $20 million for alternatives to detention, such as electronic monitoring and parole followed by check-ins.
There is also $155 million to reimburse the U.S. Marshals Service for housing and transportation of federal detainees; $145 million for the Pentagon to provide logistical support for border operations; and $30 million for Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements to local jurisdictions and nonprofits for the care of homeless migrants."

I have one question..what about children, who are citizens, that face hunger, abuse and abject poverty every day in our great nation? While tragic, this was a choice made by an adult, who was illegally coming here to exploit loop holes in our asylum system. Fix the problems within and them we canake a collective choice to help those outside our nation..
