I realize I grew up in the 50's and 60's and agree with PO1 Robert Payne that things stayed pretty normal until the late 80's.
When I was around 8 or 9 I would hitchhike into town. In my early teens I would hitchhike ride frequently and even on Sunday mornings to get to early mass.
In the early 70's I hitched out to Wisconsin from NJ. (I took the LIRR into the city, the subway to Port Authority,, and a bus to NJ)
My boys growing up, had quite a bit of freedom, they knew when to be home. Unfortunately, when I watch my grands, they don't have the same freedom my boys did. Totally different times.

One could also argue that: 1. The advent of today's 24/7/365 news outlet's non-stop looping of tragic occurrences in the "if it bleeds, it leads" mode of sensationalism, and 2. the rise of this Country's population. The 1960 US census had US pop. at 175million, 2020 census had it at 320million, a 78% increase since I was born in '61, which may give credence to the "these aren't normal times anymore" train of thought. The FBI's violent crime database shows that, when comparing this decade against 30-40 years ago, violent crimes are down considerably, especially when weighed proportionally against the population totals. The difference just may be that we're just seeing the same or even a lesser level of depravity on the news, non-stop and in greater emphasis than ever before, and it's affecting our ability to see clearly.

When I was around 7 or 8 my mom worked as a Nurse working 11 to 7. I used to walk to the hospital and walk home with my mom. We used to leave home in the morning and had to be back home by dark.

This is a Japanese TV show that has been running for 20 years...now on Netflix...
I don't see most American parents trying this even with a camera crew following their child

Netflix Series ‘Old Enough!' Asks: Could Your Toddler Go Grocery Shopping Alone?
While “Old Enough!” is long popular in Japan, it was recently acquired by Netflix, where 20 episodes are available to stream.

Good morning, Lt Col Charlie Brown! It is reported that this is a wholesome show/series.... Well, I am not so sure about that... I, for one, would not want a toddler shopping alone with the likes of child kidnapping, molestation, and the like in today's chaotic world we live in... As an added note, I cancelled my Subscription to NF because of the radical direction it has taken...
