Every time someone disputes my claim that Maryland isn't a Southern State, I remind them that Harriet Tubman was born on a Maryland plantation, escaped it, and established her Underground Railroad there. Fortunately for Lincoln, the governor of Maryland at the time of the Secession was loyal to the Union and kept the legislature from meeting to vote for secession until Lincoln was able to secure the state with loyal troops. Following the Civil War, Union soldiers who had been recruited in Germany, settled in Baltimore which became a Northern city in a Southern state.

Frederick Douglass was another great person who escaped slavery in Md. I love Harriet Tubman. Personal honor and courage in a time it was sorely needed. Frederick Douglass was no slouch either. Md has produced some great people.

CPT Jack Durish I taught elementary school, and I always had Harriet Tubman in my lesson plans to teach the kids about heroes.

I live not too far from a site that was part of the Underground Railroad. A little town called Vandalia.
