The brink of potential nuclear war ...
Not surprisingly, JFK did not mention the botched CIA operation from April 17, 1961 as 1,400 Cuban exiles were launched in what became a botched invasion at the Bay of Pigs on the south coast of Cuba.
I was in second grade in Upper Darby, PA when this speech was given. We had civil defense drills every now and then. Essentially - get under our wooden desk and stay there until told to leave.

How well I remember those days, thanks for sharing. I often wonder what JFK would have accomplished had he lived.
