Maj Marty Hogan, one of my wife's best friends is from Cashel, County Tipperary and is a graduate of University College Dublin. She's a naturalized US citizen and is visiting her family in Cashel even as I write this.
She told us that most of the celebration traditions surrounding St. Patrick's Day are of US origin. She said that while she was growing up in Ireland March 17th was, for the most part, just another day. There was no wearing of the green or green beer or green rivers. It's all an American creation.

The Irish have long been known for their bravery and vigor - it has been said that God allowed alcohol to be invented just to keep the Irish from ruling the world.
