In Boot Camp, we said "Good Night Chesty Puller" each night as we laid in our racks. One of many great men in Marine Corps history.

LTC John Mohor - It does sound like Sergeant Major Pat Durkee was another great Marine. Serving in three wars is amazing. Semper Fi.

Cynthia Croft - General Puller was a great leader that was admired by his men. I am reading Jeff Shaara's book, "The Frozen Hours," which is a novel about the Korean War. It includes Colonel Chesty Puller's role in the war.

During my turn on Parris Island the platoons stated the same each night. Knowing precisely where "Chesty Puller was but never said. Met the general when knee high through my grandfather. They were boyhood friends, distant cousins. After the navy doctors retired the general there was a medical check up that found him heart healthy. Saw the general at Christ Church during football games on the sideline never sitting but moving with the plays up and down field. Observed the general around Saluda, Virginia where he lived and walked every where. No one called him "Chesty" to his face just "Sir" or General Puller.
Not until fleet did the generals picture from West Point, Virginia get displayed in my foot locker. During inspections the question would be asked "what the hell are you doing with that photograph Marine ?" the explanation and sailed through each junk on the bunk. General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller was Grand Marshal of the West Point, Virginia 100 year celebration of being a town. The town council attempted to contact the Marine Corps Band to participate in the celebration. The town council was advised due to schedule conflicts no can do. They suggested contact Langley Air Force Base Band. Which the town council did. The Langley Air Force Base Band stated they would be happy to march in the parade. Then someone advised General Puller. The Marine Band landed and marched in the Town of West Point, Virginia parade with General Puller as The Grand Marshal of his home town celebration. Another Puller legend. Semper Fidelis

What are the metrics used to say he is the most decorated Marine in United States history? Yes he has six Service Crosses, but there are Marines with two Medals of Honor. I do agree that the has led a fascinating and distinguished career, but to say he is the most highly decorated Marine is highly subjective.

Agree. We always said "Good night, Dan Daley, wherever you are" each night in Boot Camp. Winner of two Medals of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, and others.

Valid question and I don't know how you could apply math in comparing LtGen Puller to SgtMaj Dan Daly, or MajGen Smedley Butler. The latter two had 2 MOH each and more. Butler also had USMC Brevet Medal, which was given to Officers during a time when they could not be awarded the MOH. They all share the same distinction as Maj Audie Murphy as being highly awarded for their actions. All were heroes.
