Thanks SP5 Mark Kuzinski for informing us about US Navy WWII pilot and ace Stanley “Swede” Vejtasa who received his second Navy Cross for his part in the 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea. He piloted his SBD Dauntless and got jumped by seven Mitsubishi A6M Zeros while trying to protect USS Yorktown (CV 5) and Lexington (CV 2) from a Japanese attack. As is fitting for a SBD Dauntless pilot he was in fact dauntless as he had three confirmed kills, "two using the SBD’s two forward M2 .50-caliber machine guns. The third came when Vejtasa rammed the Zero, slicing off a wing."
Then in October 1942 at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. He was now flying the F4F Wildcat. During the strikes the Japanese launched, he shot down two Aichi D3A “Val” dive bombers and five Nakajima B5N “Kate” torpedo planes. In total he seven confirmed and one probable Japanese aircraft during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. It was a performance that arguably kept USS Enterprise (CV 6) from joining USS Hornet (CV 8) as hulks. Swede got his third Navy Cross for his performance.
Kudos to Stanley “Swede” Vejtasa!

Great story and I love the pictures. It is hard for me to imagine the courage and skill these men possessed.
