Vikings were fierce- but paying a ransom for them to leave seems like a way to set yourself up in the future for more failure. No easy way out if you can't match the enemy in combat.

The "Danes", Old English term for the raiders from the North, were opportunistic. The term "Viking" was an action someone took, roughly translating into "Going to seek fortune". What made them truly fearsome were their Longboats, absolute marvels of the time, allowing for Navigation of the open sea, and a draft shallow enough to navigate the rivers and waterways, and the speed, giving them flexibility and mobility unmatched by their opponents at the time.

Alfred came up with a brilliant idea to counter two birds with one stone. Build forts. Inland , away from the waterways, he built large forts so the farmers could run into, with their livestock, to deny the raiders horses and food animals, he also built graineries in these forts, so when harvest came, the farmers could bring their crops into it fast. The walls of these forts would be manned primarily by the farmers long enough for a muster of the nobles forces could react and catch the raiders between the soldiers and the walls of the fort.

The second use of the forts was they were placed at the mouths of major waterways, and these were manned by soldiers, not the conscripted farmers, and these denied the raiders entry into the heart of the country by river. It was nearly too little too late, as the raiders did capture Winchester, the capital of Wessex, but failed to capture Alfred.

I have done a lot of research into this time period, as it greatly interested me, and being retired, I have time on my hands to pursue the things that interest me.

Contrary to the History Channels depiction, The show "Vikings" is horribly inaccurate in much of what portrays.

Netflix has a show called "The Last Kingdom" which is far more historically accurate, but again takes plenty of creative liberties for dramatic effect at the cost of truth.

And last, most of the written historical works were written by the Catholic Church, whose motives and truthfulness is highly suspect in the description of these Northmen who came to their shores.

Until the king of France bribed Rollo, and gave him Normandy in exchange for protection from the Scandanavians. Little did the King of France realize that his actions would ensure Viking Blood in all the royal houses of Europe.
