Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on January 24, 1943 German Gen. Friedrich von Paulus, commander in chief of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad, urgently requested permission from Adolf Hitler to surrender his position there, but Hitler refuses.
Hitler promoted him to Field Marshal vainly assuming that Von Paulus would never surrender since no German Field Marshal had ever surrendered.
Hitler expected Friedrich von Paulus to commit suicide rather than surrender but Von Paulus defied him and surrender 91,000 soldiers of which only 6,000 returned home to Germany [all Hungarians were killed]
