I’m currently planning on renenlisting for active duty, I've talked to recruiters about it in the past, I’ve been told that I would need to reach out to my unit in order to have them specify what the RE code could be, but to no avil, I have not been able to find out why I have that code. Before I hit my ETS and after, here are a few things I was thinking it could be;

1. PT fail within 1 year of my ETS
2. I owed money for lost TA50 (which has been paid back since)
3. Class 3 dental (which I haven’t been able to take care of since I ETS.

You would think that the PT flag would do it, but I have been unable to confirm nor deny that.

Months have gone by and I am now working with a different recruiter in a different state, (moved from California to Oregon).

My question is, what can I do to find out exactly what this code is for? I was discharged honorably and really just want to serve my country again.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

SPC Gabriel Flores that would be the truth. You will need to know what the code was given for. I had an RE3 for a medical discharge, but I've heard the gamut for them - disciplinary, failure to PT, etc etc etc. Your recruiter will need to know what it is for in order to know how they need to proceed to get you back in.

Look at your long form DD214. There will be a more specific code showing the reason for the RE3 and your recruiter is supoosed to know how to decipher it.

The best path is by correspondence. Paper is always your best friend. Write your unit for their response. They either will or won't respond. If they respond, there are two things they can say. Here's the reason or we don't have a clue. By definition RE-3 is typically waiverable. Given whatever they do/don't put to paper, that's what the Recruiter will have to go on. Have any other relevant paper, i.e. proof of payment, current proper dental, etc. Many Recruiters will not make the effort to push forward absent paper because it's an easy out. If you don't get a response from your prior unit, you'll have your other documents including the letter you sent the unit. Not a slam dunk, but it shows you're serious. The best thing you can do if the issue was PT, is to be prepared to do that with a score well above the minimums. If you get no or a no clue response, then a possible option is to correspond with (not call) the appropriate IG. The complaint would be the unit is not complying with proper administrative procedure (proper question asked, proper response refused) but I'd have to rely on better brains in your service to weigh in on that one. One thing that pisses IGs off with their Command is having to push them to clean up their mess. Final thing is the unit may have done a generic RE-3 vs. greater admin work associated with an RE-4 or they don't want to be caught in a lie down the road. A generic RE-3 can mean "we really don't want him and don't think anyone else will either." Those possibilities are a whole different can of worms.
