Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "MAGIC NEOWISE." The 'magic' refers to the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescopes at the Roque de los Muchachos European Northern Observatory on the Canary Island of La Palma. These telescopes detect the brief flashes of optical light produced in particle air showers as high-energy gamma rays impact the Earth's upper atmosphere. The picture was taken July 20th. The Milky Way is to the right, and our friend NEOWISE is to the left, complete with both ion and dust tails on display.
