If memory serves me properly. US island based planes spot the Japanese fleet first but each wave of our planes miss all targets. The Japanese admiral sends hundreds of planes to engage our fleet. The consequence of this action is the Japanese fleet can't support it's attack planes and defending planes simultaneously. Planes would have to be ditched, so the Japanese admiral focuses on his attack planes. The real American punch comes from attack planes from it's fleet. I believe they flew lower to increase accuracy. With each successive naval battle, we degrade the Japanese fleet. By the end of the Battle of the Philippine Sea, I believe the Japanese capacity to use naval air power was nil or close to it. The Japanese could not support the Japanese occupied islands, and the US shut down her shipping lanes.
