This from our CEO at National HQ today
Today marks one year since the tragic air collision at DCA.

As we remember the lives lost and the families forever changed, I want to recognize the important work our region carried out in the immediate aftermath and throughout this past year.

Red Crossers from the NCGC region were at DCA within two hours of the incident. From the start, our teams worked closely with airport partners, military representatives and local officials to understand needs and offer support. We staffed the Family Assistance Center and provided disaster mental health, spiritual care and health services to families who were navigating the first painful hours and days after the tragedy.

We stood with the military community that also suffered a profound loss. Our volunteers remained by the sides of families during their site visit to the crash location, offering a steady presence and compassionate care. This week, as the NTSB held its final hearing, our mental health and spiritual care teams continued to support families as they revisited the events of that day.

I remain incredibly proud of the way our volunteers and staff showed up for the families, friends and first responders impacted by this tragedy. Whether you served in the Family Assistance Center, provided comfort dog support, coordinated behind the scenes, or helped families during memorial events and hearings, your compassion and professionalism made a difference.

I also want to acknowledge the weight today may carry for many of us. Please take care of yourselves and each other. Give yourself space to process how you are feeling. If you need a break, take one. Step away from your computer, take a walk, get a cup of tea or connect with someone you trust. Let’s offer one another extra patience and support today.

Anniversaries of disasters can bring up difficult emotions. If you are struggling, the Disaster Distress Helpline is available 24/7 at [login to see] .

To everyone who played a part in this response, thank you. Stepping up in moments like these is what it means to be a Red Crosser.

Take care,
Dale

I responded to this last year at Reagan airport. I worked with the families of the aircraft, then the aircrew families and finally the helicopter battalion (both members and families)...yesterday I attended the memorial service for the helicopter battalion crew at Davidson Airfield along with other Red Crossers. We had four wonderful comfort dogs and handlers along to help us. A very moving ceremony that ended with a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace...no dry eyes in the place.
Two other separate ceremonies were taking place and being supported by Red Cross yesterday...one for the families of the aircraft crew and one for the families of the passeners.
