Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Virgo Cluster Galaxies." Collectively lying some 50 million light years from Earth in the constellation Virgo, some of the cluster's most prominent members can be seen with smaller instruments. A 6-inch telescope will reveal about 160 of the cluster's galaxies on a clear night. Many of the brighter galaxies in this cluster, including the giant elliptical galaxy Messier 87, were discovered in the late 1770s and early 1780s and subsequently included in Charles Messier's catalogue of 'non-cometary fuzzy objects.'
The image was captured near Jalisco, Mexico. The stretch of galaxies down the right side of the image is referred to as Markarian's Chain, named after astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, who discovered their common motion in the 1960s. The most recent member of the Virgo Cluster to be in the news here is at the top left: Galaxy M87. It's the home of a super massive black hole, the first black hole ever imaged by planet Earth's Event Horizon Telescope (back in 2019).

Thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for Saturday, October 10, 2020 entitled "Virgo Cluster Galaxies."

I hope and pray you are each enjoying a wonderful Saturday evening.
APOD background
"Explanation: Galaxies of the Virgo Cluster are scattered across this deep telescopic field of view. The cosmic scene spans about three Full Moons, captured in dark skies near Jalisco, Mexico, planet Earth. About 50 million light-years distant, the Virgo Cluster is the closest large galaxy cluster to our own local galaxy group. Prominent here are Virgo's bright elliptical galaxies from the Messier catalog, M87 at the top left, and M84 and M86 seen (bottom to top) below and right of center. M84 and M86 are recognized as part of Markarian's Chain, a visually striking line-up of galaxies vertically on the right side of this frame. Near the middle of the chain lies an intriguing interacting pair of galaxies, NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, known to some as Markarian's Eyes. Of course giant elliptical galaxy M87 dominates the Virgo cluster. It's the home of a super massive black hole, the first black hole ever imaged by planet Earth's Event Horizon Telescope."
