To be honest the eternal Son of God suffered, bled and died to to make atonement for the cumulative sin of all humanity to make away for reestablishment of relationship between men and women and God. This is only effectual for HIS adopted children. Since we don't know who will be saved we are not to judge unrighteously since all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
Before time began, God determined which human beings would be elected to salvation during their lifetimes. HIS Basis is unknown to us but those who have a personal relationship HIM recognize it was not based on our character. God accepts us exactly as we are - warts and all :-)
I am grateful to the Christ. As a soldier, I recognize that many if not most soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen who fought and died, were focused on those around them - team mates, squad mates, etc and their family members.
Few if any in the conflicts since 1898 were thinking about the impact of their death on freedom for this nation.
It is likely that many in the Civil War believed they were fighting n the correct side. The same can be true for many in German, Austria, Hungary and Japan in WWII believed they were on the correct side.
