I'm currently deployed overseas as support to the US troops in a civilian capacity, and I want to continue my service and drill with another unit since they offer to let me drill with them, but I have been told I can't make up drills with another Army Unit I will become a liability, like getting shot or blown up! Does anyone have experience in a similar situation? Thanks in advance.

It is not legal to perform T32 duty OCONUS, period.
No one is going to ask the SECDEF for permission to create a one man DUIC to place you in a T10 status for a drill period, because that's not a thing.

You need to contact your unit and submit a DA 4187 to be transferred to the Inactive National Guard (ING) for the period of your overseas contracting.
When you get back, submit another 4187 to get released from the ING.
This is a conversation you needed to have with your unit prior to leaving for the contract.

MAJ (Join to see) - A TPU assigned to the Army Reserves can drill or RST in a T10 status OCONUS. An MDAY assigned to the Army Guard cannot. In a T32 status, that Army Guard unit and that assigned MDAY belong to the state, not to the Army. And T32 duty can only be performed CONUS.

SGM (Join to see) - T32 duty is primarily performed CONUS. But if T32 duty could not be performed OCONUS, then Civil Affairs units would never go anywhere (CA is a NG asset, not a USAR asset). Puerto Rico, Guam, and other U.S. territories would not have NG units (they do). Hawai'i is not considered "CONUS", yet they have a NG unit.

There are exceptions to policy. I'm sure the NG unit would be able to make an exception, as long as it is justified and signed by the State GO or the BDE CDR, so that SGT(P) Cortnay can remain in good status.

Every unit is measured by metrics. The NGB probably has a policy regarding this situation. This isn't the first time it's happened and it won't be the last. It's just a matter of finding the updated policy.

My point is, as LTC Jason Mackay also states, "I have seen where people have gone to Korea and Germany where there are reserve component units and the losing chain or command authorized the soldier to drill with that unit for constructive credit or simply gained a letter of acceptance from the overseas unit commander and transferred". I have seen this happen, too.

With all that being said, and I hear what you're saying, what does it hurt to look into this and try? If anything, if unsuccessful, he will have had the opportunity to learn and become a lower level SME as it pertains to this type of situation. If successful, he is able to drill with a unit near him (as long as that unit is not in a combat or hostile file area).

MAJ (Join to see) - the OP was not clear where the unit was going, but I interpreted it as a hostile fire area with him being deployed as a government emergency essential employee or a contractor accompanying troops.

MAJ (Join to see) - For the purpose of T32 duty status, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, USVI and Puerto Rico are considered CONUS for those Guard units.
Yes, may NG units frequently do train overseas, whether that is Overseas Duty for Training (ODT), or deployment orders. Regardless, those orders are all published under Title 10 authority.
ODTs are directed, allocated and resourced with the POM cycle, they are not available as last-minute orders cut for convenience to correct problems in the way we do for things like home station AT.
TPUs in the Army Reserve benefit from the convenience of operating under T10 authority every day.
MDAYs in the Army National Guard are under the T32 authority of 50 states, 3 territories and one district, under the authority of a governor and TAG until such time as they are issued T10 orders for a mission. Drill status, whether present for duty, or a SUTA (RST) is performed and paid under T32 authority.
This is not a policy, this is US Code, and there is no ETP for federal law.
The two right ways to do this in the Guard (overseas contracting) is to take 90 day contracts, return and perform missed duty in order to both make up enough drills for a good year and not turn Non Val Pay (negative end strength) or transfer to the ING for the length of the contract, return and transfer out of the ING, take the bad year as the cost of doing business and optionally extend to make up for lost time.
The easier way is to just transfer to an Army Reserve unit, or to the IRR and affiliate with an active unit as a Drilling Individual Mob Augmentee (DIMA) if you plan to contract, that makes it possible to RST with any Reserve or Active unit, just about anywhere in the world.

You need to communicate with your chain of command. I have seen where people have gone to Korea and Germany where there are reserve component units and the losing chain or command authorized the soldier to drill with that unit for constructive credit or simply gained a letter of acceptance from the overseas unit commander and transferred. If you are trying to jump on with a deployed unit to a hostile fire area, it is as COL Dana Hampton says. Another option may be for you to transfer to the IRR temporarily. Even if you are with a ARNG unit, the have been federally mobilized under Title 10.

go through your Support chain let them know your going over seas and where. They should be able to tell you the units closet to were your going. Or you can do your drills in advance at your own unit.

SGT(P) (Join to see) - OK are you saying you want out of the Guard and are being told you can only transfer to the ING? If that is true then that is not true the regulation clearly states it is the soldiers choice you can go ING or IRR. If this is what your saying let me know and I will look up the regulation for you but I will need a chance its been a long time since had to do that. Also if you go IRR you will fall under a whole deferent program so be sure.

SGT(P) (Join to see) - Ok You want to stay in the guard and transfer to a deployed unit. WOW you want much. LOL ok In that case you have to contact the deployed unit they all leave a rear D. ask if you can if so will the send you to the deployed unit the chances are slim they will. You will still have go through pre Mob and the unit is not going to waste their time for one guy. If your just trying to deploy find a unit that is deploying and transfer there and start with that unit from the beginning they will loose people and need guys to step in.

Negative Top, I'm already on ING and also deployed with the US Troops as a civilian, I was trying to come out of ING and start drilling with the Army units who offered to let me train with them and send certificate of training to my home unit. But to do so I'll be a liability to my unit because I'll be on title 32 and I might get shot or blown up since I'm working in a combat zone.

SGT(P) (Join to see) - Ok now your into something beyond my knowledge base title 32 can be strange and has lots of regs I do not know. So we are back to contact your units training NCO he/she should senior guy on duty explain to them your deployed as civilian and would to make up your drills with a deployed unit. See what they say. I see were you going with this so I would not expect a positive out come. I do not know the regs for being in combat zone with on drill status. You are the first I have heard of trying. but please let me know how this works out just interested. sorry I could not help you
