September 11, 2001 was a day of infamy for this nation IMHO. It was peaceful and clear for most people in this nation on that day. For those on the planes that were hurtling towards buildings and those inside the World Trade Center it was a day of abject terror.
Hopefully as time passes, we will remember the days when September 11 was just another day of late summe.
On September 11, 2001 I was supposed to go to the Pentagon for an informal meeting with several other soldiers and DA civilians. I was at home and it was a beautiful morning. I was reading the Bible and praying. I learned of the attack of the World Trade Center towers by phone call and then I was told about the attack on the Pentagon. After I called a contact who was inside the Pentagon, I was told I could not get to the Pentagon because it was prohibited.

The loss of two friends and the knowledge that timing is everything...I had just left the Pentagon that morning....I was in the train station underneath it.

On September 11, 2001 I was supposed to go to the Pentagon for an informal meeting with several other soldiers and DA civilians. I was at home and it was a beautiful morning. I was reading the Bible and praying sitting at my kitchen table - enjoying the beautiful weather. I learned of the attack of the World Trade Center towers by phone call and then I was told about the attack on the Pentagon. After I called my contact in the Pentagon, I was told I could not get to the Pentagon because it was prohibited.
Later I learned some neighbors of a couple from our church were on the plane that hit the Pentagon. They were supposed to leaving for an anniversary trip and were killed instantly.
I discussed the situation with my wife and then I volunteered to be recalled to active duty.
I was brought back to active duty on October 23 and mobilized on early November to my duty station the Pentagon. The Pentagon was flooded for a couple months and we were remotely working out of a building on Eisenhower Avenue - surrounded by Jersey walls and MP protection.

On September 11th, 2001, I was getting ready to leave for the Pendleton Roundup with my girlfriend at the time. The entirety of the rodeo week was very somber.

Before my 4 hour drive. I called my Guard unit to see if there was any news of a callup. There wasn't any news. And my unit wasn't called to active duty until late January 2003. That was the same month I took command of the Oregon Army Guard's MP Company.

I was watching the Today show, thinking…they got us…they found a new way ( islamic terrorists had already tried bombing WTC before; it was THE TARGET in NYC. Then plane 2 hit tower #2 and it was so clear we were under attack…deep breath, I stepped outside, knowing America was forever changing in an instant. I had feared this when the USS Cole was bombed in a friendly port in broad daylight. On that day,I I was at work …at Dyess AFB, watching our lobby tv tuned to CNN, and remarked to the MSgts planning to retire that the message was that “we’re next” and that they would be stop gapped…and not bother packing.

I left in FEB 2002, and sure enough…they had to stay in, retirements canceled. It was eerie to see it all come to pass. My former coworker/friend, told me that they had been so dismissive of my prediction, then creeped out by how accurate I had been. The whole Middle East…Camp Frenemy!
