Thanks for reminding us about the date and location when rail transportation was possible from east to west coast and back again SGT John " Mac " McConnell. Of course travel by rail was risky in those days. The Pinkerton agency and others helped to protect the passengers and cars from outlaws and marauding Indians. Rail crews were posted along the rail network to maintain and repair the rails, ties, trestles and bridges. Those teams were armed because outlaws and Indians periodically attacked them.
However when bison herds migrated across the tracks that stopped travel for some time.
For various reasons, massive slaughter of the bison had been going on and was escalating. The slaughter reduced pressure on the rail travel but increased the ferocity of the plains Indian wars which peaked in 1876 on Jun 25, 1876 – Jun 26, 1876 at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
