About Capture of German U-Boat U-505. When I was much younger I hand the privilege of meeting Dan Gallery (Rear Admiral Daniel Vincent Gallery (July 10, 1901 – January 16, 1977) at a dinner in Philadelphia where I heard the story of the capture of the U-505 and nearly burned my nose with hot coffee when he said “The definition of a calculated risk is a gamble which military men take when they can't figure out what else to do and which turns out to be right. When it turns out wrong, it wasn't a calculated risk at all. It was a piece of utter stupidity.” He was one of those people who do something incredible and just brush it off as being normal he was a very modest man with a sick twisted sense of humor. It was a real privilege to break bread with him.

can visitors go inside? it's very close quarters so I'd doubt they want to run that risk, plus souvenir hunters will strip whatever they can get and it would be hard to watch everyone closely, liability issue with potential injuries also

I don't know, CWO3 (Join to see). However, a number of years ago, I toured the USS Drum (part of the USS Alabama museum) in Mobile Bay. The tour was designed, as I remember, so that you went below near the stern, walked along one deck, and exited near the bow.
Maybe something similar is done for U-505.
