The VFW helped me out tremendously when I applied in 2008 SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. I had several inches of military medical files and the VFW rep went through them with me and translated military Title 10 medical information to veterans affairs Title 38 medical conditions.
This VFW representative has helped me out again this year. The VFW will be with you for the long hall while you deal with the VA which tends to be slow. There are a number of good veterans service organizations (VSOs) which exist to help veterans such as Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the American Legion.

PO1 John Miller - thanks for reminding me, I updated my response to name both Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the American Legion. Over the years we have supported DAV with contributions.

I used the Texas Veterans Association. I tried American Legion, but they were no help. TVA pushed my papers right through, and I received a 100% disability in six months.

GREAT article Joe!

As I was doing my out-processing at Ft Knox, one Station was the VFW guy. He is the sole reason for my receiving my 50% VA rating. He politely asked if I wanted his help and I said "Sure!" He meticulously went through my medical records and connected the dots with reoccurring ailments and afflictions. I basically did nothing but answer his questions and guide him to the approximate time frames of events. I swear that dude went through my 3" thick file at least three times. Page by page. Of course, I did my due diligence and had almost every medical document from 24+ years. I never really realized how broken I am after "sucking it up" for so long. It took hours for him to do his thing. I got my final VA rating about 4 months after retiring.
