Once again another lesson not learned from the Armchair Commandos and in Vietnam the WWII Vintage A1E Sky Raider had to be taken out of mothballs to fill that role which the fast movers could NOT do effectively. The A1E could get in low and also remain in the area a lot longer and proved outstanding support for ground troop or even escort rescue choppers when saving downed airmen shot down by the enemy. . The A10 Thunderbolt II, (Warthog) was designed to fill that very function and still does it better that anything else in the air. The A10 pilots and the people on the ground that need that close air support both certainly know how effective and also durable it is. Taking the A10 out of service in My opinion is complete stupidity. I may ad while in Vietnam Myself in 1968-1969 I did see first hand what the A1E Sky Raider could do and although i haven't actually seen the newer A10 Warthog in combat have seen demonstrations of it flying capability and was very impressed in a positive manner.

All 100% true SMSgt Lawrence McCarter, but the A-10 has one absolutely fatal problem: Flying one will never get you more than one star, it's not a sexy jet fighter, and it's not some mammoth strategic bomber.

Let's face it, the Air Force has never seen ground attack as a serious mission. Ground attack is something that cowboy fighter jocks do when they can't go dogfight because we have air supremacy and they want to go shoot something. Even when they do ground attack, they hate Close Air Support. CAS gets you the thanks of ground-pounders (who don't really count) but there's no glory in it unless you actually get shot up in the process (and even then your boss will complain about the damage to the aircraft even while signing the recommendation for your 999th air medal).

MSG Thomas Currie - You certainly are correct about that ! Getting down in the dirt isn't what the real glory seekers get attracted to but the ground troops sure know first hand how badly needed this continues to be and the actual need for close air support grows.

Bring the body bags because the F35 around a fuel, Be out of ammunition, Fly too fast and probably cause collateral damage and kill ground troops. It could also be shot down by our enemies. Because it doesn't have the titanium bucket to protect the pilot. It doesn't have 1350 rounds ammunition. It also doesn't have backup. I draw like a manual systems in case all the hydraulics are shot out. The F35 cannot fly with 1 m between shut off either.

Bring the body bags and have plenty of replacement pilots and aircraft.

LTC (Join to see) an F35 is designed to fight other aircraft.. Why would you try ground assault with an interceptor craft?

Simple enough reason "Why would you try ground assault with an interceptor craft" -- because they had to call it a "Multi-role fighter" to get the billions needed to buy it.
