Alan many folks complain about the weapon but there is a reason that frame has been around and in service for so long.

The original was chambered in 7.62 x 51. The M16 obviously ended up in the NATO 5.56. The bayonet being mounted on top of the barrel was something (on the original Armalite AR10) I had forgotten about.

Debate over M16 and 5.56 but I could hit 9 out of 10 at 450 Meters but if there was a twig in between well we know that story of Vietnam. 7.62 ruled because it would just go through stuff but not as accurate or deadly if hit close 7.62 goes straight through a 5.56 military load hits you in the shoulder and comes out you ass think about that... but was a military load also that only Feds should be able to get.

I love both 7.62 and 5.56 rounds with the right weapon. The weapon is the question Stoner was good but only SEALs knew how to take care of the complex bastard but effective and lead to the current weapons we have.

SSG Keith Amacher - I think both rounds are good and have pluses and minuses. I qualified in the Marines with the M16A2 3 times as an Expert and regularly put all 10 in the black at 500 yards with no optics/scopes etc., just the iron sites. I own an AK platform that fires the 7.62 round and it packs a punch but I find it's accuracy a little wanting.
