Thanks for informing us about SPC Michael Byrd's mission to help "as many homeless vets as [he] can find to help" COL Mikel J. Burroughs.
I concur with CPT Jack Durish's response. There are so many non-profits which are trying to help house homeless veterans out there. It seems difficult to determine which are legitimate. For Christina ministries I check to see if they are endorsed by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA). I also check the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any issues and if the nonprofit is listed there.
I appreciate SPC Michael Byrd's response to CPT Jack Durish's response.

Ltc. Stephen, i am in the beginning stages of establishing this charity/fund and as such i haven't established with ECFA nor the BBB but once i have the start up costs covered i intend to pursue this with an unrelenting resolve as i know 3 families right now that could be getting helped by SO MANY of the funds/charities that are out there but they are more interested in collecting your money's for themselves and in keeping to make a big business with no actual contribution aside from what they can do to satisfy the media. I do not intend for media coverage, I intend to pursue families and single vets who are on the cusp of losing everything or have lost everything and trying my damnedest to insure that they have a new path to follow even it if means i have to help them by bringing them back home with me! I will not allow this to keep happening to our brothers and sisters in arms!

Causes such as this tug at the heart strings. How can we know if they're legit? We've all heard of well-intentioned efforts failing as well as not-so-well-intentioned scams. I know of two small, local charities who are doing a great job helping vets (and active duty personnel). How many more will we need because our government is failing to keep its promises?

CPT DURISH,
I know that there is always a risk when donating to a new start up like this. But I can personally assure you that my heart is in the right place as well as my business model for cycling the U.S. to find and target vets that have not been treated right. I don't plan on just handing out, i plan on teaching budgeting as well as showing them a new way to live. I can not sit by anymore to let my brothers and sisters former and new run the risk of losing everything. Yes i know there are programs out there that they can go to and ask for help. But my hope is that people realize the value of my organization. We find those that the system has lost. We will do what we can to help them get back on track so there is no longer the epidemic of veterans being homeless or jobless! This is how you can know that it is legit! I don't stop and even though my back is really messed up i'd rather finish out my service by helping our family in arms than sitting around and waisting away doing nothing and hearing about the decline steadily on the news and social media sites. Enough is enough! please help me to help others sir!

You have a valid point CPT Jack Durish. I hope that coming from COL Mikel J. Burroughs there is a little more legitimacy in SPC Michael Byrd efforts. I know Colonel Burroughs is one of our biggest advocates and we would expect the same from SPC Byrd.

CPT Jack Durish, SFC William Farrell, and SPC Michael Byrd my policy is to always trust my brothers and sisters that come to me directly and request my assistance. I always take that approach and its paid off well in the past. There have been a few that have broke that trust, but not many. Michael will do what he says he's going to do and will keep us updated on his mission right here on RP. The question you'd ask is: "What if the trust is broken?" The answer is simple you'll no longer receive my help going forward in the future. I hold no grudges, but I will not put my reputation and services on the line for someone who breaks the trust. I won't bad mouth them or "call them out!" I just terminate the relationship. That is all that is necessary. We have to build trust here on RP to the very best site possible and so that is the direction I'll take first and foremost! That's my explanation!

SFC Farrell as i said i know there is risk to any donation to if a charity is real or not. However as i am in beginning stages i can swear up and down till i am blue in the face that i am on the up and up. But until i get the donations needed and can get going to help those in need of it i will have no absolute proofing of any of it. And each vet/family helped will be honored by me via my posting on rallypoint to the situation and how our efforts will have helped them!

The key word is "legitimate," as LTC Ford mentions. Vet's need a place to live. I know of a few charities that are doing a great job, but I also have come across unscrupulous organizations that at the moment of truth - have denied help to vets. Great post COL Burroughs.
