Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on February 2, 1887 Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, was celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, it gets scared and runs back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring.
Punxsutawney Phil is the current "rodent meteorologist"

Too bad he didn't wait a couple of days. We have a foot of snow on the ground, it is still coming down and not a single ray of sunshine piercing the clouds. He wouldn't have seen anything as his chubby little body would be buried in chilly white stuff and we would have an early spring.
This has been one of those winters one is ready to be rid of by the end of January.
Stay warm everyone and if you don't hear from me in a week or so, come dig me out!
