Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski that the Fourth Battalion, 503rd Infantry of the 173rd Airborne Brigade stood down on August 6, 1971 as they prepared to leave the country of South Vietnam for the units last time. Individual soldiers may have returned but the unit itself would not.
The individual replacement system which sent individuals to replace dead, wounded, or MIA soldiers in accordance with some calculus that determined which units had priority was hard on incoming newbies and those who had to train somebody who was replacing their friend.
There are advantages and disadvantages to individual replacement policy.

Speaking of the dead LTC Stephen F. , i remember coming home from Korea on emergency leave in 1970, maybe eight months or so before i went to Nam. The plane was filled with silver containers. Out of boredom I got up to look at one of them and it said something like contains the remains of PFC So and So. That image has been with me the rest of my life. Little did i know as a 17 year old kid.
