Sometimes that state will promote a retiring NG officer one rank. It is only symbolic and does not affect official rank or retirement pay.

SSgt Robert Marx
I read his biography posted online by "The Star" and he was brevetted a Lieutenant Gen. by the state of Maryland in 1994. He served as TAG until retiring in 2003.

LTG (MD) Fretterd was promoted prior to his retiring. While in the state of MD he was authorized to wear three stars. When he went outside the state, he reverted back to his two-star rank, as the LTG was not federally recognized.

The one I knew here in Michigan now has a follower, my 10 yr. old grandson thinks the general is a really cool guy.

I did not know that at TAG was a 3 Star just one at the NGB? Is this still correct? Rest in Peace!
