Gene Krupa & his Orchestra 1947 Boiler Room Drum Solo, Red Rodney

I have a great song and band/orchestra from the late 1930s that I believe you will all enjoy! Many of you may remember a very talented drummer by the name of Gene Krupa... He began his career in the 30's and continued from there with his orchestra well into the 1960s... This particular video was taken from a movie where Gene Krupa's "Boiler Room" drum solo from 1947 film "Beat the Band," took place and featured a young Red Rodney on trumpet & Frances Langford, singer...

"Eugene Bertram Krupa (January 15, 1909 – October 16, 1973) was an American jazz drummer, band leader and composer known for his energetic style and showmanship. His drum solo on "Sing, Sing, Sing" (1937) elevated the role of the drummer from an accompanying line to an important solo voice in the band.

In collaboration with the Slingerland drum and Zildjian cymbal manufacturers, he was a major force in defining the standard band drummer's kit. Krupa is considered "the founding father of the modern drumset" by Modern Drummer magazine.

Krupa-Rich drum battles

Norman Granz hired Krupa and drummer Buddy Rich for his Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts. The two drummers performed at Carnegie Hall in September 1952 and it was issued by Verve as The Drum Battle. The two drummers faced off in a number of television broadcasts and other venues and often played similar duets with drummer Cozy Cole.
