Deportation to Camp Auschwitz 1944

Trains regularly leave Westerbork for concentration camps further east. On Saturday September 2, 1944, the names of prisoners who must leave the following day are read aloud. Included among the 1019 names are those of the eight inhabitants of the Secret Annex.

The next morning a very long freight train is waiting. Around seventy prisoners are pushed into each wagon. Men, women, children, young, old, healthy, sick. Most of the prisoners have to stand. The Frank family manages to stay together. Lenie de Jong van Naarden was also on the train and recalls: "Many people, also the Frank girls, slept against their mother or father, everyone was dead tired."


The train trip is three days long. In the wagon is a bucket that must serve as a toilet. Within a short time the stench is unbearable. The prisoners can barely breathe. Janny Brilleslijper: "If by chance you landed next to such an air hole, you had some relief from the stench, but you could catch a cold because it was so drafty." One moment the train picks up speed and the next moment it slows down once again.

Rosa de Winter-Levy later says of her journey: After two days, we were exhausted, a man died, and there was an old woman, crying children that couldn't take it anymore.
