I think they believed that if they could get a "foot in the door" that they could convince the other side that there was a commitment here.

Just shows how Johnson took it to a whole new level. I still think our involvement would have been way better if Truman hadn't drastically changed out his far eastern advisors nor restored French Colonialism back after the Japanese surrender. I just wishe we all could pay more attention and learn from history! Thanks for a great share Mark.
