COL Mikel J. Burroughs - I realize most of my responses here in the Motivational Quotes section are out of step with most other RP members. They are doing variations on the theme, I’m doing a backbeat, to use a musical analogy. If it gets under your skin, I can change, after all you guys have been doing this a lot longer than I have been here.

You asked where I get this stuff. For 9 years before I retired (2 years ago last month), I was teaching emotionally disturbed teens in a residential treatment facility. These were kids removed from their families by the state for various reasons. Most had heavy duty reading problems, most couldn’t write a coherent paragraph, most were years behind their peers in all subjects. My paraprofessional and I would get the class in the morning, usually 8-12 kids in usually 9th and 10th grades, and we had them without break for six hours.

I posted a writing prompt four mornings a week, on Friday one of the kids was tasked with having a prompt. The idea was to learn to write a 4 to 5 sentence paragraph that made sense. The last item in a MacDonald’s job application is “Tell us about yourself.” That item is to find out if you can write an intelligible note for the boss, for the next shift, whatever. Writing just a little is critical to getting a job, even at MacDonald’s. Besides paragraph and sentence mechanics, I emphasized thinking about the prompt, analyzing what was given and thinking about how to expand it. I was trying to lead them into a little deduction and induction about the prompt. I rewarded novel responses and especially outside the box thinking. It is amazing how quickly the kids would get into this (we made sure to keep it fun), and they would compete for the cleverest, the most well written, the most “off the wall” but still pertinent response. It made for a fun, productive first 20 minutes each day.

You asked, “Where do you find these and how to you come up with such awesome MEMEs?” It comes from doing writing prompts with a bunch of kids 5 mornings a week, 9 months of the year, for 9 years. I do not want to bother anyone or get on anyone’s nerves, so as I offered above, I can cease the “backbeat” and switch over to “variations on a theme” if you, for any reason what-so-ever, think it is for the best. LORD I lift the suicidal, the homeless, the despondent business owners, family members and those who have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 to YOU. I pray dear LORD that YOU give each one a sense of purpose to carry them through and a large measure of hope in YOU. I pray that YOU bless each one with exactly enough success in this purpose to take them out of their slump.
I pray for the President of the United States Donald Trump, the Vice President of the United States Mike Pence, the members of the Supreme court of the United States, the members of the United States Congress dear LORD. Bless the POTUS and the VPOTUS with wisdom and a clear sense of purpose for the direction of this nation including economic recovery. I pray for wisdom for the SCOTUS as they take on cases and rule on them. I pray that Congress members recognize that pork should not be included in authorization and appropriation bills and that all ‘pork shall be stripped from these bills including any proposed stimulus bills.
I pray for a clear sense of purpose for the government leaders and functionaries to restore trust in the government and logical steps to repair the respective economies in the relatively free world including Australia, Canada, Mexico, India, Europe, Africa, Philippines, Japan, Korea, Central and South America.
