Thanks for reminding us about the history of Selective Service Act and system AKA the DRAFT SGT John " Mac " McConnell
I received my selective service car in October 1974 coincident with turning 18. I had long planned on enlisting long before. I turned in my draft card when I signed up for the delayed entry enlistment program on October 23, 1974. On November 11, 1974 I reported to the Philadelphia, PA MEPS station and was shipped out to Fort Leonard Wood that afternoon.
Images: draft-lottery WWII; Young American men being drafted for WWII; 1969 Curtis Tarr the man who instituted the national draft under President Richard Nixon; Draft Poster who as LTC Stephen C. points out was drafted by Montgomery Flagg in 1917. The "I Want YOU for U.S. Army" poster is iconic. It motivated many and was a source of ridicule by others.

LTC Stephen C.
LTC Stephen F., the famous "I Want YOU for U.S. Army" poster was drawn by James Montgomery Flagg in 1917. By his own account, he used his own face as the now iconic face of Uncle Sam to save the expense of a model. The similarity to the poster and his photograph is unmistakable to me. You are pretty dated, Dave, but I guess you did not realize this draft was from WWI.
