Thanks for sharing SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL the opinion piece about the MARSOC Raider insignia and how Raiders feel about being marines first. It reminds me that SEALS consider themselves sailors, AFSOC special operators consider themselves airmen, and Army Special Operators consider themselves soldiers when push comes to shove. Esprit de corps is important for morale and discipline.

Carlson's Raiders and Edson's Raiders did not exist for two full years (formed mid 1942 and disbanded early 1944). So... not really a tradition of the Marine corps. Most of their operations they fought as conventional infantry. After action reviews led to a decision to disband them. High on the reasons for disbanding was that the belief that it was deleterious to the overall "Esprit de Corps" Marines felt as Marines, citing what the Marine Corps believed was prevalent between Airborne and Ranger units in the US army.

I have always thought the Army spent so much time trying to make each branch special at the expense of the well-deserved pride of being a soldier.

The Raiders were used the first couple years of the war. The reason they were called raiders is because the fought behind Japanese Lines and lived off the land. By 1944 the raiders had achieved their purpose and were put in regular units. The Marines also had Paramarines but they were disbanded also, because a fighting force can't be parachuted into a Jungle. They were also put in the 5th Marine division when it was formed. Semper Fi.
