I try to be respectful for each person I come into contact with, my friend SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. As many of us know courteous is not a universal constant. What is courteous in one culture is offensive in another. In our own land we have people form many different cultures and it is wise to understand what is courteous behavior to the people we are interacting with and just as important what is uniquely offensive .
Example in Athens Greece in 1981 I learned that extending a hand upwards with fingers spread out as in a greeting or wave was highly offensive to the Greeks who considered it a curse based on their hatred for the Turks. I learned there to wave with my hand moving from side to side, etc.

LTC Stephen F. I think I read somewhere that a smile is universal.
