He is NOT MAJ Pete Hegseth. He is Pete Hegseth. He might be Pete Hegseth, MAJ, USA (Retired), but he cannot go around being billed as "MAJ Pete Hegseth."

The IRR is as its name states Inactive, but still holding the Commission, Warrant or Non-Commission one accomplished in the Active or Active Reserve status they previously held. Commissioned Officers do have some additional requirements and responsibilities that Non-Commissioned Officers do not have but those in the IRR are still 'in' and it is especially true for a military forum like RP. Not sure why a SGM or someone who has earned their Doctorate would try to push back on this, do you Dave? I only said that as an example SGM.

How can we elect people to an Office that we don't where he or she stands on any given issue that pertains to the well being of the great nation.

Yet for the past couple of decades that is exactly what "we" as Nation has done at all levels of Governments. Few of those elected would tell you how they felt any given issue once they got into State and National politics. The warm and fuzzy feeling we had with them when they were just local elected members of the community is lost when they have to move off, or work else where, and no long under the microscope of the community that eleted them.

PVT Mayberry: I think a lot of American share your frustration, that's for sure. We elect politicians who spin us tall tails of what they will stand for...and then they go to Washington, DC or (insert State Capitol here) and won't fight. Good citizens have to stay informed on what their members ACTUALLY do, and join groups that "watchdog" these members and expose their double-speak. In my book, one of the recommendations I make is to find a way to shoe-horn the states to get rid of partisan gerrymandering. So many congressional districts are drawn politically (or based on demographics) and therefore almost completely one-sided. If more districts were drawn based purely on geography, we'd see more competitive districts -- and therefore more responsiveness to the people.

MAJ (Join to see) i hope you will be the DOD Secretary in 2025.
I was very sad that liberal Lloyd Austin is the current DoD Secretary. I am also a USMA graduate, I enlisted to be a 12b Combat engineer on November 11, 1974 and was appointed as a USMA cadet in July 1976. I graduated as an Infantry 2lt on May 28, 1980.
I realize that you posted this discussion in 2016. I am responding late. I responded to my friend at LT Tom Jones post focused on Whoppi Goldberg insulting your service and qualifications.
Far too many are questioning your qualifications on this old post.

I must admit as I read some of these responses I am amused to see that such a high proportion are from old farts like me bitching about the younger generation. Take a knee for a minute, fellas, and have a listen. The older generation before you said the EXACT same things about YOU! "Lazy, good for nuthin, will amount to nothin WHIPPERSNAPPERS!!!!"

It did not bear out then and it will not bear out now. The youth irritates us because they are inexperienced and dumb. We try to warn them, but they know what is best and they just sprint right out into the open and get nailed for their assery. The world is a bad ol place, and it has a way of barking some knuckles into shape when needed.

I can just say one thing: I wish like hell I was as smart now as I was then!

I know I said "youth of today" in my reply, but I don't mean to cast a blanket over all of them and say they're all soft, selfish and lazy. I know quite a few "youngins" that are just as hard working, selfless, and patriotic as any of us old farts, they're the ones who will eventually rise up and lead us into the future. Sadly, there are many, many more of the soft, self-centered lazy ones who distract us from the good ones. They're gonna have a hard job ahead of them, but they'll get it done.

Couldn't agree with you more. We are to Stubborn to realize that we aren't the same Super Power as we were in 1989. We are more of Super Power in name anymore, we have shrinking ability to reach out and touch someone. We have only applied bandaid fixes to issue within our borders, as we tell others how to become great. We ignore the basic Human Rights in many ways of our own Citizens. We allowed us to become more backwards. Back in 1933 we were one of the Forward Thinking Nations in the world, now we keep complaining because the older of us had to do it one way, but younger think we should do another way. In part I remember when I was the younger thinking, and now I am part of the older of us. In many parts I agree with what the younger people are saying. For my Generation didn't do anything to stop uncontrollable spending or allow many of the best paying jobs to leave the United States for else where. It is time we become fiscally responsible, and work on becoming Forward Thinking again.

We sure do Alan and Abbott. But, decline is a CHOICE. There are some things we could do right away that would set America back on track. We still have so many massive advantages, if only we can unleash the potential of our people. America's citizens have led the world for over a century, and if we give them the space to succeed (and fail) we can stay in the lead. We need to reform our education system, unburden our entrepreneurs, rebuild our military, simplify our tax code, seal our borders, and a number of other things. But with the right leadership, and the power of citizens working together, the 21st century can be an American century. My book makes this case, and I hope you'll check it out: http://www.amazon.com/Arena-Citizens-Republic-Reinvigorate-America/dp/ [login to see]

To start with we need to refocus on the education system. No one watched them and the liberals took over. Professors who had never done anything in real life indoctrinated the young and it spread down to the Pre School teachers and hence the children. They do not learn the 3 R s or History or Patriotism but Political garbage. 2nd we need to clean the nation's political system from self serving, lying individuals to those with morals and values. We need to do as they did with the Wigs and Torries and begin anew. 3rd we need to put the flags and Christianity back in the system and do as a few countries do. You are welcome here but you adopt or respect our values as we respect yours. The Federal government is supposed to be an umbrella to protect the citizens and hence a combined military for that protection. The states should handle their own more localized issues and not big brother. We have become a nation of citizens dumbed down, contributing to a bureaucracy that is only concerned about itself.

LTC Staves: Have you read my book already?!? Sounds like it, because we are on the same page. We must educate citizens, and stop indoctrinating them with "feel good" crap. We need to get patriotism and faith back into the classroom. We must truly hold politicians accountable. And we need to demand assimilation and allegiance. America is not just a country...it is a set of ideals! We are an experiment--and we need our citizens committed to the cause. Our Republic cannot survive if we don't have citizens who understand what America represents...otherwise we can be seduced (entire socialists running viable campaigns for the presidency).

If you're interested, my book comes out on Tuesday and touches on many of the themes you mentioned: http://www.amazon.com/Arena-Citizens-Republic-Reinvigorate-America/dp/ [login to see]

Thanks!

Sorry I did not but I'm old school. As to one of the previous comments I understand premises of separation of church and state but that does not mean erase the premises this nation was founded on of Judeo Christian belief. Some years ago schools stopped accepting free flags from the VFW women's auxiliary (does not exist any longer and is just VFW with women). They don't say the pledge of allegiance anymore and slowly removing from everything. I believe all are allowed to have your own beliefs but if you come to my country and want to be welcome remember you were the welcome guest. I should not have to rearrange the furniture in my home because you don't like it when I invite you dinner.

I think the change in the people of the US started completely different. Parents didn't care. Babysitters took over. Especially Nintendos. Or TV. Americans forgot 50 years ago that we needed a country of caring people. I believe the American people shot themselves in the foot, starting in the 1970s

MAJ (Join to see) Who are you really? Fox news person? Army major who served? There is way too much unknown about you to ever read your book. If it reads like Dr Thomas Joiner's book on suicide the that is his 2024 drivel about people who commit suicide, I will have more comments on the pages about your comments than you would believe. The reason veteran suicides in America continues to grow yearly, since 2001, the VA leadership doesn't know how to care nor does VA leadership know what to do because they cant listen to suicidal veterans. The VA along with the active duty military is like the three monkeys, hear nothing, see nothing, say nothing useful to suicidal veterans.

I believe citizenship requires the citizen to buy in the system. Citizenship is ownership in the government. How do you go about to bring people who feel detached from system?

Great point SGT...how do we bring people back to "citizenship" once they've been detached from believing in their country? First of all, we need to educate them--all throughout life. They need ownership in the government because...they are the government. Part of this education is also example...we need to show average people that politics (and our economy) are not a rigged game. That the rich, famous, and well-connected are just as accountable as average people. So many people today believe there are two sets of rules out there...one for the elites, and another for them. And, in many, many cases, they are correct! That is why, as a conservative, in my book I try to refocus conservatives on the concept of "equal opportunity" that applies to folks at the bottom--and the top. So, in short, I think education and equal opportunity would go a long way.

Almost 2 hours later, I must sign off -- I have to catch my flight! But I have really enjoyed this discussion, thank you so much for having me. I just wish I could have answered every question (there were so many, and so many good ones!), but I could not; it I missed you, feel free to hit me up personally on Rally Point.

What a fantastic community here at Rally Point -- truly the best America has to offer. I am honored to have served in the same military as all of you, and thank you all for your service and dedication to this great nation. Continue your fight for America, as the "good citizens" and "good patriots" Teddy Roosevelt spoke of. Stay "In the Arena" -- our country needs you. She is worth fighting for.

And, if you're interested--one more time--my book comes out on Tuesday and can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Arena-Citizens-Republic-Reinvigorate-America/dp/ [login to see]

The speech in itself speaks on what made America and even other soverign countries, great - their people and the people's will and drive to improve - through character and hard work.

I'm assuming that this topic is in relation to the immigration issue that we are currently dealing with here within the US and as well as our force projection around the globe?

If my assumptions are correct - then my questions would be as follows:

- Immigration: This obviously is a key issue for the upcoming election and has significant second and third order effects - regardless of the decision of the next president's actions. If you were a cabinet member on the next president's staff - what advice would you give him/her on how to structure the immigration reform (or do we just maintain what we currently have and actually enforce laws?)?

Troop Strength & Force Projection: If you were the SecDef for the next president - 1) What would you recommend in regards as to the "proper" number of troops? Those of us that have been in long enough to serve under three presidents (or more) and for those who have served before us and served under three plus presidents - have all seen the fluctuation of troop levels according to whomever is in the white house. 2) How would you help the next president see the world in terms of force projection? Currently, we have conventional troops in several countries , conducting a myriad of tasks and operations - mostly falling under the "advise and assist" model in some sort or fashion, and we have SOF in even more countries, conduction a myriad of SOF tasks as well, with their host nation brethren. Some people see it as the US is to involved with foreign affairs and others see it as a form of conflict mitigation/prevention, by identifying countries who have been susceptible or are vulnerable to internal/external influence of the violent extremist organizations. What direction would you urge the next president to take?

Thanks for the time MAJ Hegseth.
